THE JUNGLE JOURNAL – 10/16/17

STATE OF THE JUNGLE
Victor Landeta, Daniel Rodriguez, and Edwin Solis are in the middle of their fight camps for the ACC event on 11/11/17.  All 3 men are just looking to get in the cage after long layoffs.  Victor Landeta hasn’t been in the cage in a couple of years himself so he is ready to dominate whoever they put in front of him.  Leo ” The Mexicutioner” Muniz is ready to get back after it since his first pro loss.  “The Mexicutioner” is an exciting fighter so everyone is looking forward to his return.

KIDS PROGRAM
What seems intense and to aggressive for most, is regular training for use here at the Jungle Gym, even in our kids program!  Every Thursday the students of our Lions Of Leadership program get to participate in our stand up sparring class. Our Sparring class includes punching, kicking, takedowns and submissions.  Now, why is this type of training important? It puts your child in a situation as close as possible to what a real altercation might be like.  With this type of training kids are getting comfortable using the techniques they’ve learned in class with a partner who’s throwing punches and kicks at them.  This is going to allow them to get comfortable in these situations, so that if it happens outside of the gym, it won’t be their first time dealing with it.  If any of you have questions on sparring or getting your child in the Lions of Leadership program, let us know at the front desk.

Lions of Leadership Open Mat is Every Sunday at HQ and Next Month on November 25th at Jungle Gym New Rochelle. These are great training sessions so do your best to be there.

TEENS PROGRAM
You guys should be drilling!  Now we all know drilling isn’t the most exciting to to do, and we all would much rather just get into rolling. Now rolling is definitely an important part of improving your Jiu Jitsu, you also have to make sure you’re spending enough time drilling as well. When you’re drilling you get to practice your techniques as close to perfect as possible. It’s hard to practice a new technique when you have someone resisting everything you attempt. Drilling also allows you to burn many repetitions of a technique from what ever position you want. It’d be pretty hard for a newer student to practice their Americana from topside if he’s rolling with someone who’s guard he can’t pass. So make sure you guys have a good balance. When you come in for Open Mat feel free to grab a partner and work that technique you learned earlier in the week. If any of you guys have questions on this feel free to ask any of your coaches.

FIGHTERELLA
The best way to mastery in any subject is taking it step by step. This is especially true when we talk about losing weight, getting in shape, or achieving a healthier life style. Maybe today isn’t the day you do a pull up, but you could definitely take the steps towards that goal. The most important thing is that you just do something, anything really, that brings you closer to your goals. The one thing you want to avoid is remaining stagnant with old habits that never moved you to the goal you want so hard to achieve.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Student spotlight goes to:
Goes to the Wednesday sparring crew.  Everyone is really coming together to support their brothers and give them some hard sparring rounds.  Without a strong tribe a fighter is gonna have hard time living a fighter’s life.

THE JUNGLE JOURNAL – 9/18/17

STATE OF THE JUNGLE
Earlier this week Master Chim taught an excellent first class at New Rochelle’s brand new location. Right now they are at 714 north avenue. They are now right across the street from Iona College! It was another memorable event for the Jungle Gym tribe. Jungle Gym New Rochelle’s future looks brighter than ever.

Yesterday was an excellent promotion event. We had 4 new students complete the Instructor Certification Course. Shout out to Joel, Spyros, John, and Jensen for making it happen.

We had 3 of our brothers and sisters from New Rochelle walk the gauntlet to earn their blue belts. Congratulations to Zach, Joal, and Kelly! Stay the path!  Ethan “Tyrion” Olavarria received his purple belt. This is good news for all of the purples and browns that were getting tossed around by a blue belt and eating overhands. Now they can get worked over by a purple belt lol!

KIDS PROGRAM
School is back in session, and so is the Jungle Gym’s After School program. Throughout the school year, we here at the Jungle Gym will be providing a safe and productive place for parents to have their kids spend their time in. In our After School program, kids will have homework time, where coaches will assist kids with their school work. A long with that kids will have a martial Arts class exclusive to the after school students. One of the biggest benefits of the after school program, is the accelerated development of their Jiu Jitsu techniques. This is due to the simple fact that they’re spending more time on the mat along with more one on one attention. For parents interested in the program let us know at the front the desk.

Lions of Leadership Open Mat is Every Sunday at HQ and Next Month on October 14th at Jungle Gym New Rochelle. These are great training sessions so do your best to be there.

TEENS PROGRAM
School is back in session! We here at the Jungle Gym don’t us the term ‘Good Luck’,  so I’d like to say make it happen to our teens students entering the next grade. A great thing about Martial Arts is that it transcends what we do here on the mats, this is something help you in all aspects of life. We fully expect our teens to tackle the school year with the same effort and determination that they show on the mats. I want to give a special shout out to two long time teens students Adam Rodriguez and Josh Richards on taking the next step in their academic careers with starting their first semesters in college. These two are no strangers two Pressure, being on the mats here at the Jungle Gym, so I have no doubt that they’ll be successful in any endeavor they take on.

“Work hard…Rest hard?”

Not to long ago I had the privilege of coaching a young lady through a one on one session. She was skilled so I chose to turn the intensity up as any good coach should. Now towards the end of one of her rest sessions during the work out I reassuringly told her “Your doing great! Let’s get back to work”. To which she replied “I worked hard,Coach. I should rest hard.”  I laughed..she wasn’t entirely wrong. There’s nothing better then a good rest after a hard workout. AFTER being the key word in that sentence, however. There’s no  “hard rest” while there’s work to be done, ladies we have to strive for that healthy lifestyle together!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
This weeks student spotlight goes to all that participated in in New Rochelle’s inaugural class. Ritual and participation is a very important part of building the strong tribe that we have.

JUNGLE JOURNAL – 9/4/17

STATE OF THE JUNGLE
With the summer coming to a close I expect to see a lot of those old faces that were slacking hard to up their attendance again.  Its all good, I expect it every summer. Understand that the Jungle Gym is open all year round.  The standouts that train here all have ONE thing in common. They train with the same CONSISTENCY all year round.  Some people are self motivated.  Some need some sort of pressure in the form of a competition to keep the fire lit.  There are others that just live this life day in and day out.  Being the most POWERFUL version of yourself is the ultimate goal.  Keep this in mind when you are designing your training schedule.

Quick reminder: We have a team open mat from 10am-12pm today.  Make it happen after you read this!

KIDS PROGRAM
We are just about two weeks away from our next Promotions ceremony!  Promotions will be held on Monday September 18th.  This time around we have two students eligible for their next rank. We have Serenity Reynolds looking to move up to gray belt and Anthony Santana looking to move up to yellow belt. We’re super proud of both students, who’ve both taken the steps necessary to be eligible for their next rank. Both have been turning in their Lifeskill homework every month a long with displaying proficiency with their techniques. They both even competed in our past in house tournament, The PressureQuest.  Students who aren’t getting promoted to their next rank, will be eligible for their mat skill stripes, which we give out every promotion.  Feel free to ask your coaches if you have any questions on promotions, see you guys on the mat!

Lions of Leadership Open Mat is Every Sunday at HQ and This Month on September16th at Jungle Gym New Rochelle. These are great training sessions so do your best to be there.

TEENS PROGRAM
Promotions are just about two weeks away!  We have several of our teens students eligible for their next rank. Throughout the week you can demonstrate your required techniques to the coaches. If they’re moves that you need some help with feel free to ask your coaches or teammates for help. You guys will have until September 15th to complete your list so make it happen! See you guys on the mat!

FIGHTERELLA
Ladies! Today I want to ask you a question. Its a simple one but the answer is your own. Why do you need a coach? Most would say to teach the workouts, others would say to keep count of the reps, end i even expect a few to even reply they don’t see the value in one. To me the value of a Coach is that external source of pressure. That person who’ll push us when things get to easy and encourage us when things get hard. To me the value of a Coach could not be undersold keep that in mind the next time your coach tries to pressure you..

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Master Jules and Master Bill
I usually do not give a spot light to black belts because they do need the pat on the head.  I was motivated to do so, because I was running Summer camps this week and was able to see the morning sessions and catch Master Jules and Bill show up, when the younger bucks could not be bothered with getting better that morning.  They got some good training in that day.  This is a lifestyle for them.  Their competitive years are behind them, but they enjoy training because it keeps them sharp and it is a great lifestyle. We also discussed that it keeps us away from bad habits lol!
